NEW HEALTH DIRECTOR NAMED FOR MECKLENBURG COUNTY
CHARLOTTE, NC – Assistant County Manager Michelle Lancaster announced today that Marcus Plescia, MD, MPH will become the new health director for Mecklenburg County effective Feb. 3, 2014.
Dr. Plescia comes to the County from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, as the director of its national Cancer Prevention and Control programs. Previously he worked for the North Carolina Department of Health & Human Services (DHHS) as the chief of Chronic Disease and Injury. Dr. Plescia has done extensive work in community health and health disparities and has published widely in scientific journals. He has also helped develop changes in health policy at the national and state levels, including a ban on smoking in NC restaurants and bars.
“I am pleased that Dr. Plescia will be coming back to Mecklenburg County and North Carolina to lead our Public Health Department,” said County Manager Dena Diorio. “He has an extensive background in public health at the local, state and national levels which will allow us to continue to offer our community excellent public health services.”
Prior to joining North Carolina DHHS, Dr. Plescia served as a family physician at CMC Biddle Point and was assistant residency director at Carolinas HealthCare System (CHS) for eight years. He was the principle investigator for the community health advancement grant called REACH 2010, which demonstrated nationally-recognized improvements in community-wide health behavior to address health disparities. Dr. Plescia graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a Doctor of Medicine degree, Masters of Public Health and a Bachelor of Science degree in biology.
“Marcus is well known in Mecklenburg County by a great diversity of people and professionals,” said Deputy Health Director Bobby Cobb. “I look forward to working with him to continue our integration of public health services to the County from our CHS contract and leading the way to a healthier community.”
Dr. Plescia will make $218, 000 per year and will lead a department with approximately 500 employees and a budget of approximately $35 million.
